View Full Version : Spiderman 3 Review (movie) ****Massive Spoiler Alert****

So I went and saw Spiderman 3 the other night and damn was it good. I have to say for a movie that is over 2 hours long there wasn?t a minute in it that I thought was boring or wasted on undeserving plot development. In this installment of Spiderman the non-action part of the story line focuses mostly on Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson?s relationship and the amount of stress and strain that Peter Parkers alter ego Spiderman is putting on it. While Peter wants to do the best by MJ he also has the massive responsibility of being Spiderman and having to help rescue damsels in distress or run away trains, or in the case of S3, cranes.

The introduction of new villains into the movie added an interesting mix to the dynamics of how Spiderman sees himself and how the public sees him, thanks to some shoddy photoshopping of some photos by Eddie Brock Jr. to get a job at the Daily Bugle. Eddie manufactures a photo of Spiderman in his new black suit robbing a bank, however the photos are a composition of photos that Eddie took at the scene and a photo Peter took months earlier near the Empire State building. Peter discovers this and exposes him to J. J. Jameson getting Eddie fired and ruining his reputation all over New York, this along with Peter stealing his girlfriend (I?ll get into that in a minute) makes Eddie vow to get revenge on Peter/Spiderman. Due to Eddie?s emotional state when the symbiote takes over his body creating Venom. Eddie thrives off the abilities it bestows upon him and gives him the means to seek his revenge.

Flint Marko a.k.a Sandman on the other hand although still being a ?bad? guy is only doing it to try and help his sick daughter who needs a surgery and medicine to cure a illness that she has but in the end after venom is defeated but Spiderman with the help of New Goblin gives up and regrets doing what he has done. Sandman is created when Flint falls into a pit of sand that scientists are using to test an experimental machine, in the movie they do not specify what the machine is supposed to do, but it looks like it is supposed to change the way the molecules bond together, this binds Flint with the sand and allows him then to turn himself in to sand whenever he wants. Flint not being the most intelligent person in the world goes on a crime spree robbing armored cars and banks stealing money to pay for the procedure to cure his daughter and of course Spiderman cannot let this happen so as you would expect they get into some very astatically pleasing and dramatic fight scenes.

Sandman is visually spectacular on the big screen, the graphic designers and animators did an awe inspiring job making Sandman, Sandman. Venom on the other hand doesn?t look the best. He has a very cartoon like look to it. When I heard that Venom was going to be in this movie I thought the designers would have taken a look at a lot of the old horror movies as well as the Spiderman comics and seen that he is a very scary character, which he still is in the movie, but only for a brief second, when you see him properly you can tell very easily that he is computer generated and fake. Obviously he is but there doesn?t seem to be any realism to him that makes me think that he could be a real character. Venom would have to be my only gripe about the FX in S3 the rest of the FX has been done very well and thought out very carefully to bring the characters to life and make them look as real as possible.

Now on to what most of you would be wanting to hear about, Spiderman?s black suit. In the movie the black suit is a symbiote that came from a meteoroid that fell from outer space. It hitched a ride on the back of Peter Parkers moped and attached itself to peter at night while he slept listening to his police scanner. The symbiote enhances the abilities of the wearer as well as giving them new ones. For Spiderman there weren?t any new abilities that I saw in him use, it just heightened the ones that he already had. Making him stronger, quicker, more agile and able to hide in dark places. However the suit also brings out the evil in the wearer. When Peter wore it he seemed to grow balls, so to speak, getting what he wanted, be that new clothing and a new style and a new girl after MJ broke up with him, forcibly though, so he took the Gwen Stacie, Eddie Brock Jr.?s girlfriend. Sporting his new style, ranging somewhere between classically classy and wannabe Emo, Pete begins to make a move on what he wants in his life. Starting at the Daily Bugle where he gets himself a permanent position as a staff photographer. Peter realises what the suit is doing to him and gets rid off it only for it to attach itself to Eddie creating Venom.

Venom knows that by himself it would be a hard task defeating Spiderman, so he persuades Sandman to help him out. They kidnap MJ and use her as bait to lure Spiderman out into the open suspending her in a yellow cab high above street level in a new skyscraper construction yard. While Venom taught Spiderman, writing messages to him in a web, Sandman holds back the encroaching law enforcements. Spiderman knows that he would certainly be defeated almost instantly if he tried to attach Venom and Sandman so he approaches New Goblin a.k.a Harry Osborn, who hates Peter and Spiderman to the core, but is still in love with Mary Jane so with a bit of prodding from Harry?s butler he heads out to help peter, turning up at just the right time to stop him from being squashed like a bug under the giant hands of Sandman. The fight sequence between Spiderman and New Goblin vs Venom and Sandman, is one of the most thrilling fight sequences I have seen in a movie in a long time although it is not as long as I would have liked the animation in it is brilliant and the seamless transition between live action stunts and animation is done to a caliber that you don?t see very often in movies. Also the cooperation between Spiderman and New Goblin as they fight is like they have been fighting side by side for years each of them knowing what to do helping the other out when needed, with the main objective to being with of rescuing MJ. Then taking down Venom and Sandman. In the end defeating them both, however to do this Harry sacrificed his life to save Peters when Venom tried to stab him with his hover board, bit of a deja vu moment Green Goblin and New Goblin both dying by there hover crafts.

All in all the movie is excellent and there is very little that I can say is wrong with it, my only disappointment in it is that Harry dies just as he was coming good again, and the animation on Venom was a bit sloppy in parts of the movie and not up to the standards that I would have expected from a movie that cost over half a billion dollars. Still well worth the entrance fee to get in and see it on the big screen and I would highly recommend that you do go and see it. But make sure that you have seen the first 2 before hand, if you don?t you wont be able to fully appreciate the entire movie.

I?d give it 8.5 out of 10.

In his defence, he's written one of the few actual reviews to be found here in the reviews section. Rather than the usual "spiderman was good, go watch it" he actually amde some effort. In my opinion people should expect some length to a review and approach it expecting to do a bit of reading. Good job.

In regards to Spidey 3, I loved it!. The fight between New Gobby and Spidey, though short, was fast paced & frantic. And how cool is the new hoverbaord!!! I was good seeing the dark side of Peter coming out, though I'm not too sure about the hair....I can understand some of the lack of realism with venom, he isn't really a realistic character with the whole 20 billion teeth and all. Overall I was very happy.
