When I upgraded my OS from Windows 98se to Windows 2000 it ran fine, however it would refuse to shut down. I would have to actually turn the power off. Therefore whenever I booted up I would get the "Windows did not properly shut down error" and it would either make me restart or i would have to go into Safe mode.

I ended up just going back to Windows 98se, but I will have to look at upgradeing my OS at some stage so if anyone knows a way around it I would be thankfull.

upgrades like that suck

rather than upgrading to win2k, you would be better off backing up what data u need then formatting and installing win2k fresh

I believe that's what he did

well then in that case is it a VIA based mobo?

and if so were drivers installed in the correct order, did u do the F5 trick during install and did you install all windows updates to win2k before actually using it at all ?

nah it's Intel BX based. used to have this problem ALL the time with windows 98SE on my old Pentium III system. nothing cured it, not even the shutdown patch, but anyway, not really sure whats going on, all i can suggest is check the ACPI is enabled in BIOS and make sure you have SP3 installed.
from my understanding Microsh!t has released a beta version of SP4. so it shouldn't be too far away. pick that up too when it becomes official

if its a bx board then

u need to install windows using the F5 trick, make sure APM (not ACPI) enabled in bios, and ACPI or APIC or anythin like that in bios disabled.

then once installed, pdate to SP3 then install the vid card drivers.

then go to power options and to the APM tab and set the "enable advanced power managment" option to enable the computer to power off properly

bx systems pwn!

hell yeah they 0wn! in the last 9 years that i have owned a PC i have never had a system more stable and reliable then my old Pentium III 500 Mhz which was running on a Asus BX based board. didn't have any of the nonsense with overheating and instabilitys that i am having now with my friggin Athlon based PCs.
one thing i still don't get is that i never had any problems with shutdown with windows 2000 on my PIII and i never had to do any of those things you pointed out sKs. weird.

hamz with win2k its a fussy bugger when it comes to IRQ control and other stuff and depending on the board/cards on the system sometimes the steps i outlined are not necessary, however, it doesnt hurt to do so on most systems.

having said that... on newer systems (eg P4's) doin these steps can have an adverse effect on the system, P4's chipsets seem to prefer lumping every device on IRQ11 :/

end of the day it comes down to the ol' trial an error
