RTS Ladder At Monthly LANs

Just had a thought, for all those RTSers out there. You COULD start a mini league. Every monthly lan, have an RTS ladder, where there's a couple 3-4 player games happening. You play different opponents every time you go there, and then somehow make a ladder up. After 5 months or so, have a big grand final with the top 6 players.. one BIG game.. :) I'd like to see that.

yer thats an idea, RTS's would be better suited for the quantity of players we have, an ofcourse the grand final would be at a MorB LAN !

as for an incentive on an FPS side, im also a little stricken of thoughts.

I just wanted to do something decent for the RTS lovers, who don't get much attention at LANs. And I've been playing Age of Mythology lately, so that helped. :)

The problem with FPS is there is too many games to choose from, with people never agreeing on the one game.

I like the idea of the small ladder comp, just one round per LAN with the big finale at Morb. Could be cool. I also like the RTS idea, but how would we score it? And we can't decide ladder ranking on wins alone cause most likely 2 people will end up on the same number of wins. We'd need a secondary criteria. Beefy keep posting those ideas.

And Tholian I think the word you were looking for was beta....I don't know what a bata is.......

For an RTS scoring system, as long as it's the same game, I could rig up a scoring system based on the scores that you get at the end of the game, in comparison to everyone else. If ya want me to whack something up lemme know.

Pick a game first. It's easier to make comparisons when you know what scores are given at the end. I'll just do Age of Myth.

Hmmm, if we were to try an RTS ladder I would like to perhaps play a diff game each round. It would make scoring more difficult but would be much more more interesting. You reckon you could devise a ranking system??

Age of Mythology
Red Alert 2
Age of Empires 2 + expansion
Warcraft 3
Empire Earth

I was considering some older games like Dark Reign / Total Annihilation, but I don't think they were as popular as these ones... even some of these are pretty rare.

That's the thing. Having a multi-game RTS tournament is like having a multigame FPS tournament. There's games that people just don't like / don't have. Makes them enjoy it less. Better off having small, seperate competition games instead.

There's an idea. Pick a popular RTS and just run a big game or two at MorB, or run a couple different games.. Put prizes up for each one, with a 1st and 2nd place. That way, if people have allied victories, they can share. Get some names in advance.. set a time in advance, SO PEOPLE CAN'T COMPLAIN that they didn't know when it was. If they don't visit the forums, then they don't deserve to know what's going on. :)

The problem with simply choosing one popular RTS is that there would still be people who didn't like it. Sigh, people are just too bloody hard to please. I just figured that if we played different games we'd be testing the players skill at RTS instead of just testing how good they are at the one game. The ladder would be drawn out over several LANs with only one game played per LAN, leaving the remainder of the time for other activities. I realise we've had this discussion before but no one seems to have reached a satisfactory solution.

I've created this thread for discussing the possibility of an RTS ladder at the monthly LANs we were planning on holding. Do you think it's a tenable idea? Would you be interested? What games would you like to see involved and should there be different games each LAN or just the same one over and over??

I would, at most, pick two different RTS games. Otherwise people won't agree on anything. So just lay down the law and say we are playing this and this. Simple. If they aren't happy with either option, they don't play.

My vote goes to WC3 and AoM

yea i wouldnt mind some games of EE: AOC but only set to one epoch otherwise games can take about 14 hours

That's one of the reasons I didn't choose it. I like the game, but it takes FAR too long to play. And limiting the game isn't really fair to the players.

let people know early then... lets do atomic modern epoch only then.. or we could vote for it

I'd wait and see what interest we get first, and what preferences people have before you start deciding that.

Ok, so we've got expressions of interest for Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology and a cut down game of Empire Earth. Anybody wanna second these ideas or suggest a new one??

i'll 2nd WC3 + AoM... altough havn't had the chance to play AoM yet, i'll have to give it a bash a M4

i attended 90% of the LAN"s around and the last 10% is only restriced by work, so, it's only ppls like DAVE!!!!!!! that might have the REAL problem of not comming to Lans' on a regual basis

I'm afraid they'd just have to live with missing a game or two cause no practical solution springs to mind. If we started trying to cater for ladder players who didn't attend every match things could get quite messy
