View Full Version : Monthly LAN a no go
The monthly LAN events we were organising are going to have to be called off due to a lack of interest. Apparently it was simply a fad you guys had and it's not viable holding an event that's only attended by Beefy and myself.....
If u want to drum up interest them TELL US TO PUT A NOTE ON THE FRONT PAGE.
I didn't realise there was anything to it until skull told me about it
I can post a message on the home page if I choose, but considering I can't even get people to answer a simple question like "how much would you be willing to pay" what real hope is there???

theres basically a lan every month anyway i dont see the point in an arranged monthly lan it could be a good idea but it sounds like you probly wouldnt end up gettin the numbers
well im still backing the idea, how or what is used to form its regularity is still open for discussion, but by the same token, the interest in these forums does not necessarily mirror overall interest in the South-West LANning community.
best suggestion i can offer is to have some pre/post-LAN discussion at MorB 4 with all the people who you would consider to be potential regulars.
Thanks for the support sKuLLsHoT, i'll certainly ask around at Morb 4. I was however hoping for some feedback earlier than that so we can be well on our way into the setup phase by then.
ahh the wonders of adsl... lanning has now become a long passed tradition
probably still make an appearance at morb 4 tho:D
adsl does have its advantages, but lanning is still dominant because if someone is pissing you off, you can go watch them play and see for yourself that they are just good, and not cheating...whereas if its online, 9 out of 10 will be cheating :D
LANning also has a couple more advantages:
- You can hear cries of dismay across the room as you nail someone from around a corner.
- You can get up and go kill someone.. literally. :)
- You don't need to sit there and type messages on the screen all day long.
- you dont need to browse the forums for hours on end, instead you can view it over UBER-FAST 100Mbps..
Sks... why post on the forums when you can go and talk to most of the people involved? :) *cough geek cough*
I would be at a monthly lan and i guess $10 to $15 dollars would be about what i would expect to pay

I mentioned something like that the other day and sKuLLsHoT promptly added a clause to the event rules prohibiting it......he spoils all my fun :(
And thanks for the feedback Beavis
I think we outnumber sks.. he's just worried that he'll be the one in the line of fire... :)
While there are LAN's every month, I find that they are just spontanious events organised between friends. So an actuall monthly event that everyone knows of as is in the same place, the same time and the same cost would be a better system.
I just wonder if it will eventually die out and things tend to do. At the start I think it would be a very popular event, but it may taper off as interests fades and people only turn up for the bigger events such as Morb LAN's. Even that may lose interest after awhile.
Too much of something is usally bad for you and quickly becomes boreing, but does give you the chance to see who the really serious people are out there.
Depending on the size of the event would depend on weather people would be willing to pay $10 - $15 dollers ie. I would not expect to pay much more than $10 for a LAN of about 20.
Our LANs will be a set cost, every month with possible extra LANs during the holiday season. They will be at a fixed location which is permanently set up with benches and Cat 5 UTP wired up to face plates in the benches. All that will be needed to connect will be short patch leads that we will supply. So people who attend simply setup and plug straight in, nice and simple.

I think that's almost hit the nail on the head as well. Perhaps not for the bigger events, but thinking about it I can see the novelty of the monthly LANs wearing off and people not bothering anymore. Unless there was a certain reason for people to go, whether it was to play a certain game, or something, then most people will probably only turn up every so often.
While I think the MorB LANs will remain popular, the monthly ones will perhaps die off, unless new blood can be found.
what if it was to be supported by some form of a league competition? or would that just make the lans seem more of a duty than fun?
I did hear a rumour somewhere that some people may be getting involved in bata(spelling?) testing. I would deffinatley attend monthly events just for a chance of testing the latest software.
I remember the old Quake FPS comps they use to have at Big E's and from memory after about a season and a half, they died off really quick. The idea of a RTS format of some kind is appealing, but could everyone agree on which game to play. I think Clawcity and myself are the only people left playing Dungeon Keeper. lol
i would play dungeon keeper, but, i suck at it when pitted against u peepz only rts i'll play is WC3, but sifnt have a tycoon tournament, i mean that could go for 6 months for only 2 ppl :D
Transport Tycoon!!! *drools*
Transport Tycoon *SHEEESH* i remember that one will that game never die (I kinda hope not):p
as long as i have a copy that works in the latest operating system, tycoon is here to stay!
