View Full Version : MSN / Winsock Error

Ok guys, this has been shitting me long enough,

Windows Messenger (I don't like the bloated MSN one) keeps losing messages, and randomly disconnecting me from the system.

This is a major pain when your trying to chat to lady-friends :(

It seems to happen regardless which computer I use, but more often on the XP Home system. It effects Web Messenger as well, but not as often.

I kicked into Trillian (I haven't used it for like 5 years, It's changed massively, now a nice rounded package) and it's telling me that it's a 10054 error. It also seems to have problems less than a quarter of the time compared to when I'm using the M$ version.

10054 errors are Winsock errors.
I know that much.

I don't know much about troubleshooting winsock apps, and MSDN is like staring at Apples sister for a while, it's hard work, but usually not worth it in the end.

Has anyone had this sort of problem before?

I'm getting the feeling it could be the ISP, I shouldn't have to call fortnightly to get my connection checked because they have no idea how 'always on' broadband should work.

One week they sent a message to Telstra to delete my access codes to the line. And then billed me twice for the same month. F'ken useless Pr!cks.

If I can pinpoint the problem (especially if it is ISP) I can scream and yell abuse to get it fixed.

remove the spyware, and download the winsock fix... classic case. used to see it all the time...

Thanks,

I haven't had any Adware (I check it every so often) but I'll try the Fix file and see how it goes.

I'm still getting 10054 errors.
I'm guessing the problem is deeper.

I'll try rebuilding my router's rules again tonight to see if something is getting blocked.

I've never had any problems like that, aside from work (which is firewall / proxy related for me). The fact that it's happening on other computers is kinda funky. Suggests that it's not PC specific, so it's not software / firewall (unless you've got a certain bit of software on each PC you tried which interferes with it). Which makes me think it's a network issue somewhere.

Dude you can reset winsock back to it's original default setup using the command - "netsh winsock reset" from a dos box (you need winxp sp2 installed tho).

Also you can reset back to original tcp/ip config using the command "netsh int ip reset c:\reset.log" also in command prompt.

Not saying it'll fix your problem but might eliminate some possibilities

thats what the fix does.

oh and what sks siad.... ofcause! thats the cure for sure... ISP's change thier MTU on a regular basis without telling anyone. there was an issue with bigpond some 6months ago where they changed the MTU critera and all of a sudden no-one's emails were working correctly.

The reset had no effect.

You're probably going to get shitty @ me for this, but I forgot to mention that there is 2 wireless links in the house. The router and a Business Level AP live in the kitchen. Wifi to the desktop network and one to the lounge xbox. There are no wireless cards, all APs. The bridges are completely transperent. There is no hassles transferring between systems on any of the three APs.

However I have had trouble before with the laptop, even when plugged directly into the router.

I never really noticed before also, mainly because I don't play much, but it can cause hassles with Final Fantasy 11, causing a complete dropout.

but it also had troubles linked direct to the router.

try ICQ or ditch all ya friends.... Ditching friends always works an free's up bandwidth for porn downloading

10-03-2006, 12:03 PM
get drtcp and try a lower mtu setting on one of the machines and see if that helps

free's up bandwidth for porn downloading

Isn't 90gig enough?
Althou judging by some of the PCs @ some of the recent lans that is nothing...
Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves!

After today's episode, the ISP is getting the flick.
"ppp authorization failed"
for 3 hours.

Just as soon as BitTorrent finishes the last two items.

!! have to changed your MTU yet?!

10-03-2006, 10:08 PM
I've made the change, I'm waiting to see the results.

The problems with the ISP are occuring at a line-level (not the right term I know, but you get it) and effect the modem itself.
And after being abused by 2 tech support staff (the first one was a plain ol bitch, the second didn't like it when I corrected him when he was talking BullSh!t) and being overbilled repeatedly.

in my experence, people have a tendency to over exaggerate thier issues with they ISP. so my suggest would be to politly as for a "line-reset"... and ask them what the reccomended MTU should be...

you shouldn't have any issue with 1300.

10-03-2006, 10:23 PM
]politly as for a "line-reset"...

I was ploite the first 4 times they did it, and the last 3 odd, they admitted it was their fault.

10-03-2006, 10:52 PM
a full line reset should tell you if its the line thats the issue or not. if they have done one and cannot find a fault.... *shrugs*

Sorry Gem, but I have to say, same town, same ISP, same plan, no problems... (well not like yours anyway)

Sorry Gem, but I have to say, same town, same ISP, same plan, no problems... (well not like yours anyway)That really doesn't mean a lot.. :) It covers some issues, but there's always a chance for it to still be line related.
