View Full Version : 400GB HDDs
And just how much is the new 400gig SATA?
Thinking about buying a new hard drive, so hopefully this 400gig drive isn't too expensive.
2x 200's would b cheaper - if physical space is not an issue...
otherwise a 250/300 would be good value.
its always the same whenever a larger drive comes out, all the smaller ones are usually better value but for the convenience (or should we call it risk?) of it all in a single drive, one has to pay a bit more.
its only a risk if you span the disk i suppose. but only idiots do that.
OH HANG ON....
ps yeah - its cheeper to get 2x 200's. crazy.
just had a look at some technical info on these newer large drives - there is a 500gb drive from hitachi and it looks like they are back to the old tricks of jamming as many platters into a drive as possible, im a lil scared to upgrade to a disk drive that has 5 disk platters / 10 read heads, sounds like it will be hot as... i think this was a problem for ibm back in the deathstar 120gb days which i think then they had put 4 platters into the early 120gb drives. they are packed in closer together, run hotter and with the deatstars, either the disks warped a little and the read heads crashed into the disk - or they got so hot that chips melted on the things!
given that hitachi bought ibm and are again doing the "we have the biggest drive first" scenario" im going to sit back a while and hope history dont repeat itself :D
also - i think ill split this hdd info off to another thread ;)
i've been looking to get a sata drive for a LONG time simply because i need it. my system drive that my OS is installed on its terrible, slow, and small.
for about $140 for a 200gig sata you cant go wrong imo.
as for the whole "biggest drive" stuff - its enough for alot of people to go out and get one. its a dumb idea, but i guess either some people are clueless about new technology or they just have 2 much money...
its not the fact its the biggest drive at the moment, its more that they are back to cramming 5 platters into the small 3.5" housings again, i'm assuming (hoping) that drive electronics has come far enough that the heat won't be as problematic as it was in earlier days.
/me waits patiently :)
It's usually safest to wait out the first generation of drives when they do something like this. I hope they wouldn't be stupid enough to recreate the same problems they had with the Deathstars... but you never know.
as of today i'm getting a wd 200 sata- maybe a 2nd one if i dont drink this weekend.... so its unlikly..
hehe the most amusing part about sata after reading some data sheets, is that the internal sustained transfer rates are maxxed avg at just over 60mb/s (well this is from hitachi/seagate drives anyhoo) so even ata100 is a stretch for 7200rpm drives :D
the best supporting reason for sata is purely the awesomeness of a tinyass data cable/connector :D
and the fact i have no ide slots left.
im gonna get six and put them on top of each other. they can cool each other down. and ill ad one fan to help.
Iv'e been using SATA for a long time now.
SATA is better but the small plugs break easily and are flimsy.
But apart from that you can't beat a 10,000rpm Raptor drive from western digital for your OS partition. Especially if their are two running Raid 0 :D
for all us ppl who have been struggling to get our computers close to 1337 worthy. You have just beated us down again...lol.
yes u can. the 15.000 rmp drives. :)
