What Makes A good Lan?

Ok what makes a really good Lan? I am sure most of us have been to a few Lan parties(some strange some just plain out crap)
So I propose to throw up the ideas and the experiences of all the lan party's we have partaken in to better judge what individuals want and like in a gathering of nerds.wherther it be particular games or leeching or tech talk or just compitition who knows...If the descussion all our idea's can arise then we can take all of that and make the ultimate lan.....nay the fabled lan of old..the untold lan whispered upon generations of laners the....ULTIMATE LAN.....:D

I will let others comment before I myself talk of this untold Lan...

Ultimate LAN - Everyone is on the same waevlength, playing the same game together, no computer problems... Different teams in different rooms... :)

Like that's gonna happen... :) I guess it's one of the benefits of small groups..

ultimate lan: no-one complains before, during or after it, i get to play all the time, it pays for itself, organises itself, everyone has free jolt and everyone wins a prize.

And the computers teleport themselves to and from the venue fully setup and ready to go :)

ultimate lan: something akin to a kinko lan
not-so-ultimate lan: copius amounts of alcohol available.

IMHO alcohol and lans do not mix, they change the focus of the lan.

fair enuff if its 10 ppl that are 19yo+ but those 16-18yo people drinking at a LAN is crap and besides, alcohol slows the brain, and makes u drowsy so the lan would finish sooner and gameplay is shite

thats unless it was consumed sensibly just enough to loosen up without gettin plastered..but yeah i think its best kept away from lans, i mean drunk people, drinking fluids, electrical items all-round...not a good mix

my lan could have ben better if people didnt chop up sweet jebah on my washin machine, get stoned and then pass out befor 2 in the mornin even sleeping through eye blinding strobe lights...
but that was pretty funny.. i spose people make a good lan the bettre team work you have the more fun a game is especially when most games like dod and cs are based on teamwork

i mean headfones r better for voice com but speakers would be a blast
i like noise and it'd make the atmosphere better imo coz ya wouldn't have this eery (sp?) silence when ya take ya hedfones off

id have to disagree with that, a majority of games are based on stealth at some points and its a little distracting when the cunt next to you has hs speakers blastin and you cant hear the footsteps of your enemy comin around the corner, hearing those footsteps will warn you theres another guy comin, if you kill him theres the possibility that threres nothin between you and that last flag in dod.. or gettin into postion for a good old spawn camp and makin the other pussys forfit...... ar goodtimes

exactly - more and more games are focused arround realism, like the surround sound and aureal sound placement effects that add to the realism of games such as fps games - i agree that speakers would be fine - if we were all playing clickfest where crap like sound is not important...

mind you, hearing some1 coming in dod aint always good for me, i tend to look the wrong way for some reason (no its not coz i have hedfones on wrong way)

I think alcohol and speakers are both good and bad. Feels more comfortable but too many can fuck things up. If only everyone had perfect self-control. (like me :D)

I did _say_ COPIUS amounts of alcohol clawcity, perhaps you missed that? Any drinking done at kinko's lans seemed not to get out of control - the way it should be IF alcohol is aloud at a LAN - basically even if the event holder should say it is permitted then it should be kept to a bare - as sks said "loosening up" - minimum...

As for speakers... speakers would be fine if people didn't have an obsession with showing off how loud their speakers were or how booming their subwoofers were, along with the people who hear one person playing mp3s so play theirs twice as loud causing a rapid crescendo..... Speakers are fine for a LAN >~16ppl, any more than that and you run into dickheads like ph0nix who have shitty speakers yet turn them up full bore just to annoy someone sitting near them with sensitive ears (remembering the kinko lan he was at and was near timoid...)

yes speakers were allowed but there was a volume level that we were sposed to keep to you were the only one breaking the acceptible level.
