View Full Version : PS2: Grand Theft Auto: SA
Grand theft auto SA: another entry in the highly popular infamous GTA gang. Note this review is a bit unbalanced as i did'nt get very far and since have stopped playing it for the time being.
Taking on the role of Carl Johnson you return home for your mothers funernal to realize your old turf has taken a turn for the worse getting over run by rivial gangs , drugs and corrupt cops all make for a rather crappy home coming.
The controls have improved over GTA Vice and the player can work his paws over controller nice and easy making game play a very smooth ride plus with a better targeting system you can be pistol whipping bitches and putting holes in mofo's in no time.
A new feature is the skill system similar to ones found in RPG's by driving , using certain weapons over and over again your skill increases making braking and car handling very easily and increases your range and targeting with weapons.
From the limited experaince ive had with this game its all be very fun and i suggest if you like the other GTA's you should check this one out.
Yea its a great game, fully packed, probably taking the PS2 to its limits... speaking of if you plan to play this game alot you can expect your PS2 to die in the arse, technically speaking. This and the annoying load times makes san andreas a game to wait for a PC version, hopefully with multi theft auto.
The skill system is really cool, and starting turf wars with a car full of your loyal homies is awesome.
Grand theft auto SA and Smackdown here comes the pain both give your ps2 a beating if you play them for long periods in a time. I had to leave my ps2 off for a week and even after that i could only play for 20-30 mintues before it would start to freak out again.
Suggestion: Network adapter + IDE HDD + HDLoader = much better play. ;) Just 'backup' the games to the HDD, then run from the drive. Loading times are so much faster, and it doesn't have the same toll on your PS2.
but it costs so much, i personally cant be bothered buying a ps2, the mods you tell of need sending away to japans and moneys that i cant be bothered forking out.
but if they save the end user blowing up his/her ps2 every half an hour, maybe they are worth it.
so beefy was talking about mods im not to smart when it comes to hardware issues and did'nt know what he meant and was to arfaid to ask but thanks jojo for sheding some light on the zany world of HDLoaders you crazy people live in .

You, my friend, have a lot to learn. :)
a) Network Adapters can be found in stores like Harvey Norman. Even my local HN had one.
b) You can use any normal IDE HDD. You don't specifically need to use the Sony one.
c) HDLoader is also available in Australia. It's simply a CD that formats your IDE drive and sets up the software on it so it works properly.
With those three things, you can copy any original disk the to the HDD and play it from there. If you want to be able to play 'backed up' games, then you can simply chip your PS2 and it will work.
EDIT by Beefy: You're new, so you haven't experienced my pickiness before.
Please, oh please, post more than 'lol'. IF you ain't got anything worth posting, that adds to a conversation, then don't.

Not entirely correct, but pretty well.
The PS2 is the same as XBOX in that it needs a compatable drive, most are but not all, but yes no need to use Sony's.

Does anyone know the differences between the American one and our Domestic copy? (Apart from the obvious NTSC differences)
I have the import, but can see bugger-all difference between.
** edit: repeat spammer :o wow **
maybe there is no difference, just sayin the thing i hated about this game was how he started off been just a gangster then becomming a friggen F.B.I. murder and stuff, that really got to me good game gets really f'n boring once ya finished the story line though
really, san andreas, band last week?i wanna make sure i got you correctly, what was wrong with it apart from the fact you got to drive around killing who ya want when ya want?
i cant find the exact media - but basicly you could see some porn of you did the right stuff - the makers siad it was de-compiled code and a hacked mod etc etc, but it was also found to be in the ps2 version so they dragged it. (ps2 version obvsiouly not being able to be changed because on DVD etc.)
i heard pretty much the same as that, i heard that some europian hackers hacked into it and put in some code and you could change the skins and everything of the people and like make em naked and shit and so they got all that stuff and realeased a mod so you dont need to do all the code work, so far 1 grandmother has/is sueing on behalf of there grandchildren
what i heard was the cheat or mod or whatever called "Hot Coffee" changes it so when you go round to a girlfriends place for some lovin', instead of just an outside view of the place and some rather rude sound effects, you get a full-on veiwing of the action.
yeh thats what they said on triple J, thats where i got my info from...
So they banned it because?
Most kids these days have the net anyway, like a bit of pr0n in a game will slow them down.
its got more to do with the rating of the game then the fact that there is porn in the game. if there is explicit material in a game/movie such as what it sounds like is in GTA:SA then the rating will have to be changed to R or the material taken out to stay at the M15+ level or what ever the game equivalent is.
What has the world come to?
I remeber when games were cool, like
A Rockstar Ate My Hamster - made by Codemasters
Attack of the Mutant Camels - Llamasoft
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mind Benders - Lucasfilm Games
None of this censorship b/s
On tripple J if i heard correctly (i was half listening and half playing Pokemon on the gameboy in the car) the person who was saying all about this Hot Coffee thing said that if its rated R it will emediatly band, but why ban it if its R ive played games before which are rated R such as perfect Zero or what ever (you know the ps2 game where you take pictures of gohsts n stuff in that big house) and state of emergency (which was also made by R* n thats just a big riot game where ya go around blowin/killing people for points)
Didn't they try to ban Carmageddon?
I remeber them banning Postal. That was a ripper of a game.
i think they did end up banning carmeggeddon
what was 'Postal'?
there is no R classification in Australia for computer entertainment media - hence why it is auto-banned
Postal was a ripper game, using a Fallout2 style graphics, where you go well... Postal.
you're walking around murdering innocents, wounding them, killin them, and even point blank executions.

In postal, nothing beat using the stray cats as shotgun noise-suppressors! :D Stick the barrel up a cats arse and away you went. pissa.
pissing on people was gross but funny. pissing on people after you fininshed the game and played "enhanced" mode or whatever it was called, set them on fire!
I remeber when games were cool, like
Attack of the Mutant Camels - Llamasoft
That game was never cool.. :)
And people, don't confuse Postal with Postal 2. The more recent effort by Running With Scissors was pretty much out there for shock value, much like the first. :)
 my mistake.
Postal 2 is the one I was thinking of. very funny game. only annoying part was the long load time I got between areas but i think a patch fixed that somewhat. haven't played it for yonks.

read it guys, its banned.
technically its classification is revoked, which means the game cannot be sold here. (thus banned)
ohh relly. well woop de doo. so it is and i have a copy too
Careful there Oddball, your heading for a bitchslap.
Earn your wings before being a smartass.
yeh, btw noone cares if you got a copy
I see it's back on the shelves again, did they remove anything? Part of a boxed set too.
i thought they were going to ban it unless they got rid of that hot coffee thing
it was banned. it was removed from the shelves until the content was fixed. the game still sux with its shit ending...
well seeing as it sux b4 the box is opened...
