Hi guys,

What do I need to bring to one of these LANS? besides Pc, headphones & games, do I need to supply my own Blue Cable(RJ45?).
I've never been to one and I'm very keen once I get my new rig.

Thanks heaps,

LAN inventory suggestions

Required:
- PC (cables, screen, box, kb, mouse, headphones)
- Up to date virus scanner and OS updates!!!

Optional:
- Esky for drinks
- Stupid little trinkets that people will either love or hate
- Food / drink
- Funky peripherals (joysticks, controllers etc) that you can blame when you get your ass handed back to you on a silver platter.
- Batteries for wireless devices
- Operating system CD for when your system dies
- Spare headphones
- Other stuff

You don't need a network cable as they are all laid out (in theory) before you get there.

I've been reading a fair bit on other Forum topics and I'm getting a fair idea of what games are getting played and stuff, so hopefully I can get my shit together soon.

:D

Thanks lads

That was my only other requirement listed aside from hardware. :)

also helps, when ever u want to go to a lan, have a look at the "upcomming lans" page and sign up for one!

ps. this is why we need claws' "noob guide" somewhere

15-06-2004, 11:33 PM
yeah its comin

16-06-2004, 02:34 AM
Was just about to ask about that, you read my mind Delta....scary

16-06-2004, 07:24 AM
There isn't that much in there to read really.... :P

True Beefy, But not everyone knows what OS updates to get. If hes got a vanilla install of xp with service pack 1 he'd have 30MB of updates. If he downloads the sasser and blaster patches then thats one less person I have to go round giving the fixtool and patches to, Like I spent half of last morb doing.

16-06-2004, 11:35 AM
Good point. That's why I wrote 'Up to date' at the start, but looking at it again it looks like it only applies to the virus scanner.. ah well. People should get the idea now.

16-06-2004, 08:41 PM
maybe there should be a few cds up the front with the admins that have all these updates and virus patches on them so that people around morb can borrow them to update, rather than a lot of the admin guys or other guys have to go around (like tommyboy) and fix their computers.
would be a bit easier in the end. Thats just for the bone heads who forget to update or cant because of various restrictions.

16-06-2004, 09:48 PM
virus patches? We don't know what version of what scanner everyone is running. Plus if we had a couple CDs, then we'd lose track of them pretty quickly. Keeping their computer safe and secure is their own job. Most people now SHOULD have the 3 or 4 updates to stop anything nasty happening. If not, then they have 2 1/2 weeks to get them. TB shouldn't have had to go around last time, as we did pre-warn everyone via the forums.

As for 'various restrictions', there's not a lot of things that can prevent updates. For those using a pirated version of XP and can't install SP1, that's their own fault. Plus, the patches in question are less that 15MB, which is only an hour or so on dialup. But as I said, they should all be patched already. A virus scanner as a bare minimum will stop them.

16-06-2004, 10:34 PM
its only the ppl that are un-updated and patch that is going to have the issues, so its in thier best interest to do so.

however, tommy will have some CDs but MINIMAL. and if u ask for them, and dont have a decent reason, beefy will slap you up side the head i'm sure.

dead serrious. we are _not_ going to fix anyones' PC. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE. if u reg'ed for morb, u have access to an internet account. USE IT.

17-06-2004, 10:12 AM
It was bad last time due to ppl reformatting there comps before morb and not nothering to patch them or install anti virus.

We'll have available 4 cds with the fixtools and patches for certain virus's. Last time I didn't have any made and had to use my usb key due to me not thinking there where ppl stupid enough to go to a lan with no anti-virus software and not patched for blaster.

17-06-2004, 10:28 AM
Personally, I say anyone caught with Blaster or variant gets disconnected from the network for 6 hours.

If they don't wanna disconnect, then they should patch themselves. We shouldn't really need to cover such things.

17-06-2004, 11:37 AM
yeah i knew all that. but u stil have to consider ther people that dont know much about virus sscanners and updates and what not.. alll they know is how to install games and play them, but you are right. MOST people should know what to do and how to do it. click start>all programs>windows update (up the top of the menu) or visit www.microsoft.com and search for sasser and blaster patches.

Might be a waste of time. but what about a few poeple say one per row to check each perssons computer? to make sure they are updated... i wouldnt know how you would check to see if they have updateed or not. but at least the admins will know that everyone is updated if they check themselves...

Otherwise ask at the door if the person has updated? if not they can get helped out as soon as you guys find out...

Anywho, their just suggestions.

17-06-2004, 11:43 AM
Probably not a bad idea, but you won't convince me. :) I'm adamant that people should know what they are doing. If we are always holding their hand and getting us to look after their systems for them, then that's just fucked. Going around each person's PC is probably a little over the top I think. If we started doing stuff like that, then next people would ask if we could check their game versions for them, then check out something else... oh, and while you are here, I've been having problems with this and this.. It'd go on forever.

Again, people should be able to care for their own system. If they don't know how to do any of this, they can ask. The CDs out the front should cover those who are really desperately struggling to get the updates, however anything beyond that is really unnecessary. If a person only knows how to install games and play, then they are probably a risk to the LAN (seriously...). Who knows what their computer has that could cripple the network / other computers? They obviously don't.

17-06-2004, 04:14 PM
i challenge you to find anyone who has a PC and comes to lans that has nfi about virus updates...

ne way. yes, we can detect who is updated and not, love them network tools!

17-06-2004, 04:26 PM
The strange thing is, to my knowledge, you can't detect who's infected with Blaster / Sasser etc... Just who is / isn't patched.

17-06-2004, 04:31 PM
that was i meant. who is patched. sorry,

17-06-2004, 04:38 PM
Yeah, I understood what you meant. :) I was just saying there's no way to detect where the virus is coming from, aside from a indepth packet scanner

17-06-2004, 05:20 PM
*ENTER RANT MODE*
When ever anyone asks me where to find something you know what I say? Look on the fucking file server! I has Windows updates and virus removal tools for Sasser, Blast, Beagle & Netsky on it as well as current virus def updates for Norton AV and VET. I think i'll just get a bloody T-shirt made up....
*END RANT*

Sorry...I feel better now....

17-06-2004, 05:49 PM
Oh.. but.. but.. how do I get to the file server? which ones do I need? How do I install the virus definitions... do I need to restart now? What if I've got them already?

17-06-2004, 06:33 PM
Sigh n00bs, but I guess it's part of the game. I prob shouldn't post when i'm sick and grumpy.....

17-06-2004, 07:18 PM
Nah, it's all justified. It's just they can't expect us to do everything for em, hence my earlier comments.

18-06-2004, 08:12 PM
the problem is that most don't even try and do things themselves....

19-06-2004, 02:02 PM
read teh n00b guide here... (http://www.morb.ath.cx/lan_guide.php)

mmk there!

19-06-2004, 02:47 PM
