yeah, I don't have the link any more but there was an article written by John Carmack, the lead ID programmer on all their projects since Wolf3d, thru doom, thru quake, etc, telling people not to purchase gf4mx's for playing doom3, and accusing nvidia of confusing the market.

I didn't think it was going to run AT ALL without DX8 support... its too hard to program for both, they never intended on making a version WITHOUT the texture shaders, otherwise u wont be able to see water etc
so whole chunks of the game would be cut out... makes no sense

U getting a GeForce 4 "MX"!!! thats an amauter mistake man, MX is shit! ( pardon the french! ) sry to those who have "MX" cards... but you should at least get somthing alobg the lines of a
'GeForce 3' 128mb (ddr) Ti5000 or something. they kickass.

umm... one major factor in the MX these days is the fac tthat they can be had for under $250... the gf3 ti_200_ is over $300 at least...

The gamez are worth it though... what is $300 - $400 gunna matter in 10 yearz.. i mean, if ure a gamer u want exellent stuff

the one my brother is getting is for a celeron 733@916... not exactly state of the art.... and if YOU still have your new vid card in 10years and still use it i'd be very surprised...

this card will do all its needed to do... he doesnt wanna play doom3.... so...

my own machine has a gf3 tat runs at gf3ti500 speeds...

add to this that it's my father buying it, not my brother, so he's a tad tight with spending on "computer gaming hardware"

and not every1 can afford nor justify "the latest and greatest"

everyone has a budget, u have to learn that what suits the pocket best is sometimes first preference..

also, computers and "10 Years" very rarely make it into a same paragraph unless that we are talking how many years worth of work something is equivalet to or somefin

i got a gf4 mx 440 for 2 reasons:
1. they were only $225
2. they are very easy to overclock (i got 4000+ with stock and 4500+ without any other cooling)

if i had to recommend a card to someone now i would say get a gf4... it may not be as good as a gf3ti500 but when you look at it, wif a gf4 you wouldnt have to buy another card for a while... at least not till the next gf cards come out and the ti4600 come down in price...

besides i can run all the games ive got at high res and they all run awesome (that includes gta3)

if u r building a newbie, i'll let a gf4mx go in the thinking that in the next 6 months the latest and greatest card WILL be purchased

please don't refer to the GF4MX as a "gf4", it doesn't deserve the name - indeed, going by the chipset number (NV17) it should be called the GF2.5, as the gf3 is NV20 and the gf4ti is NV25....

Nvidia threw confusal at the market by calling NV17 the 4mx, a card which doesn't have the basic features sported by the 3.

I generally do not reccomend the gf4mx, however there are times when it is the only option - gf3ti200s, gf4ti's and radeon8500s are all over $250, and a lot of people will not spend that much, no matter how much convincing you try.

yeh i bought the gf4 mx mainly coz it was cheaper than the gf2's at the time and it is a 2.5 which to me makes sense considering i can't afford anything better
if i had a choice it'd definately be a gf3 in my hands atm

I've got a TNT2 and $2 in my pocket. If someone offered me a "crappy" gf2 I'd be wrapped. If they offered me a gf4mx I'd have their children. I gotta agree with those who said framerate and texture quality ain't everything.

well... considering 60hz hurts my eyes (no pun intended), and 75hz looks smooth, i'd say that considering 60hz is 60 refreshes per second, and 60fps is 60 refreshes per second, My eyes CAN tell between 60 and 72 hz.... and im saying my performance rarely drops below around 72 with all settings cranked, NOT that i couldnt put up with 40fps... but if you can play anything at 40-50fps and not say it is laggy, give me your GF3 and u can have my voodoo 3
