View Full Version : Small sized LAN n00b queries
Just thinkin of holdin a 20max LAN wif a couple o mates and wondering what else besides, switch and cables will i need. will DHCP make much of an improvment, or shouldn't i worry, if so, i'm not 100% on how to set a DHCP server up, also, i have yabba and dc++ so we can run that as a file transfer system. so i pitch this question to u guys, since u seem to have a good ol grip on setting up lans what do u reckon i'll need next?
DCHP isn't needed. just set it to automaticly assign and windows will do its work.
Also dc++ is really easy to setup a hub for, just go download the server version and u'll be sweet. 20max ur prob not even looking at any dedicated servers but they are always helpfull... so a few extra PC's being a server wouldn't hurt.
if u search around in forums somewhere u'll see a thread that jonsey posted, which i think sks explains how to setup a dc++ server.
cables + switches = awsome lan. dont _need_ anything else...
oh and plenty of piss.

If you're not using DHCP, then you'd be better off setting static addresses for the machine. Something along the 192.168.x.x range should be fine. Windows sometimes gets a little quirky making it's own addresses.
yeah sheesh damo!!
sifnt use dhcp even just settin one pc up to have ICS enabled for the trouble it takes...
even use an adsl router or somefin too ay....beef ;)
it works dosent' it!! i never siad it was efficent.
i've been to plenty of lans where 5 ppl have had the same "static" ip
when they walk in the door give them a static ip address and tell them thats what to change it too. If there too nubish to do it then have someone to help them set a static IP.
That way theres no stuff ups
And just make sure they don't plug their computer into the network until they've assigned it themselves.
yeah we had problems once two guys had the same static, 10.0.0.8 or something, we spent ages tryin to figure who it was, and it turns out to be baker (damo and tommy know him) who's address was identical to someone elses, we made it simple enough, type in 10.0.0.X and x being the port on the switch ure on, so he kept saying that he was .254, seriously, an ass, he didn't even keep with the scheme, then he continues to claim that someone must have changed it while he was his gf's house, seeing as he had it locked down, screensaver password and a heap of other shit to stop people.
well thanks so far with the help, if any u guys wanna come just let me know, we'll be holding it later in the year, but not sure when yet, i'll give ya a buzz when we decide!
definitely post it up when u do ;)
k, will do, it'll only have some places left tho only prob, but dont holds ya breaths, it wont be anything special.
btw, is it possbile ifd we can borrow equpiment off u guys? it'll save us buying shit like cables and a switch, we'll be willing to pay if u like.
an idea would tell the ppl who go to BYO
other wise you could charge a small entry fee and use that to buy a switch, nothing fancy just something cheap that will do the job, you can get a good 8 port switch for around $60-$70 off scorptec
ill be lookin to buy my own shit soon, hopefully a 16 port switch. but cracked u know ill be first at the door :D. i say always go static with lans less than 20 ppl. if ur worried bout smae addresses u could write out 20 different ones and stick them to the seats.
man, a 4 port router with a 16- 24 port swicth is the way to go. especially if you keen on sharing your DSL.
if ppl don't know how to set "auto detect" on the ip settings (even though it should already be set like that) they should be told and then if they ask agian, they can LAN out on the driveway.!!!
i dont see the point of buying stuff like that when morbs done all the hard work already, wanna borrow stuff off me, wait til i have 10 trestles then it'll b all worthwhile
if u have 5 computers at home sure - buy a switch - but otherwise get a mate to bring one or gimme a yell, theres enough switching amongst the geeks in w'bool now to network somewhere in excess of 180 ppl - i know that as a minimum for all the ppl that grabbed ex-morb stuff off me :)
well tables aint an issue, or ice cream social, but i'll get in touch a lil closer to the time its gunna happen, i'll also put it up here so u guys can come, the more the merrier!
