View Full Version : Freaky CD-RW

27-04-2004, 11:20 AM
Got the CD-RW with the computer which is about 18months ago. Had no problems exept when i was running Roxio ECDC 5.1 witch i uninstalled. But all of a sudden its stopped writing.

Everything starts normal (fillwrite buffer and all). But the moment it starts lend In, CPU usae becomes 0. And a full system freeze follows, mouse and allllllllll. <!!!!!!!!!!!>
> Not even keyboard error sound < :? >?<

I'm running/tried the following software
WIN XP Home SP1
InCD 4.1.5.10
Nero 6.0.0.15
CloneCD 4.2.0.2
Alcohol 120% (1.4.7 Build 1005)

[Desktop CD recording] in drive prop is off
Drive => LG 24x 10x 40x
driver => microsoft 5.1.2535.0

Since i last ran it i have installed
DVDx & aspi32 - tried uninstalling - no good
new HDD - checked all jumper and cables

ARE THERE ANY OPTIONS OTHER THAN TO FORMATE WINDOWS?!!!!!!!

Kill InCD, kill the inbuilt IMAPI burning service, reinstall Nero, try again.

also could try forceaspi if thats still relevant these days..

There is a ForceASPI 1.8
How is it better than just running aspi32

Killed INCD. Now instead of a full system freeze. The cd writer program just crashes!?

well at least its getting better... how bout a full reinstall of windows.... could it of been something that corrupted some important files when you uninstalled roxio????? Obviously a last resort of course but it may work. Sounds more like a software fault rarther than a hardware!!!!

is it on the same ide cable as your hard disk by chance?

also forceaspi is the bomb, if you havent tried - do so...

The roxio thing was ages ago so it wouldn't be an issue.

And ya. The CD-RW is on a IDE with a HDD

IDE0 HHD/windows & CD-RW - Standard Cable < had to use because couldn't get any long thins
IDE1 HDD & DVD-Rom - Thin/Fast Cable

Also when UDMA in BIOS is set to auto for the HHD on IDE0 i get a Blue Screen just after windows starts to load
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
What the deal with that and could i be part of the problem?

put both HDDs on one cable, and CD-RW / DVD-ROM as master / slave on the other

I changed the drives as you said and i does seem to have fixed the problem. As well as the UDMA thing?!!!

the changes+UDMA are as follows

Thin Cable IDE0
PM > HHD-win = PIO4 to ATA100 8)
PS > HDD-Stuff = ATA133 to ATA100 :(

Standard Cable IDE1
SM > CD-RW = PIO4 to PIO4 :?
SS > DVD = PIO4 to ATA33 :)

Is there a way to get HDD-Stuff back to ATA133 ?
What caused the problem?

By the Way Beffy >> Two Big Thumbs Up << THANKS

if it works good now i'd leave it at that..

glad to be of service btw!

I wouldn't worry too much about losing the ATA133 support. It doesn't make much difference..

Have you got 80 pins cables or 40 pin cables? I'm guessing one of each...

EDIT: Just saw the other post. With 40 pin cables, the drives will both run at the speed of the slowest drive. Hence the HDD you had before being dropped to PIO4 (on 40 pin cable), whereas the other drives on the other cable worked at their own speeds (on 80 pin cable).
