DC ++ Minimum Share

I'm always hearing people complain about the lack of stuff shared at LANs these days. I've even seen some cheeky buggers join the hub sharing absolutely nothing. So what does everyone think is a reasonable minimum share requirement for DC ++?

Minimum shares are good in theory, but it doesn't always work in practice.

I know at MorB, most people were happy with the minimum there (3gb was it?), however I saw a few people who still didn't want to share, so they simplyy 'shared' a lot of useless files to get themselves past the quota. It was left to the major sharers with 30GB+ to do the main portion of file sharing.

That is very true, but setting a minimum share is the best method of control we have really....unless we actually manually police the sharing and threaten people with a golf club

With a smaller event like Lotd, you probably could do an occassional sweep through and check that people are sharing legit... Kick anyone that's not playing nice.

Anyways... 3GB is a good limit. Most people should have 3GB of stuff to share.

um. why have a limit to start with. what about the little guys that have no warez and come to the lan to get some new stuff...

i dont see the problem, if they have nothing to share, thats' thier bad luck. and whats the issue on you, if they dont have anything, you cant leach anything, which is better for all.. MORE GAMING RATHER THEN LEACH FEST LANs

meh. i think its a very poor idea, but i dont leach at lans ne ways so it doesn't worrie me. i only have DC open so ppl can get all the lastest shit off me.

i think all that they will do if they cant get onto DC is go find some windows shares.

im poretty sure i had minshare at 1gb, any1 can share 1gb.

i thinkbut deltas right, the only thing is that once a person that arrives with nothing starts to grab a couple things, those things should be shared back straight away. minshare cant control that and being a nazi on dc IS the most effective way of "stopping the crap"

otherwise 1gb extra might just be 1gb extra crap that nobody wants...

I think that basicly those are the real points made by Delta and Skullz. If people dont have anything to share then they dont have anything to share and then there is less leeching and more gameing.

If you try to force people to share a certain amount then all thats going to come of it is all the LANers that complain about nothing being shared are just going to complain about there being nothing but crap shared instead.

My only problem with shared material is people that share mp3's, mpeg, avi's, programmes etc that claim they are full, complete and problem free only to find out, after you have spent hours waiting, that the file is corrupt in some way. It is really not that hard to check or maintain, anyone that can't is just too plain lazy and enjoys frustrating poeple.

Ok given the support for the "no minimum" idea i've added it to the poll. Vote away haters of share limiting!

I think if people are bitching about people not sharing on the DC++ Hub then just turn it off and tell them to stop breaking the LAW. You run the LAN's for gaming not so people can be encoraged to break the LAW. (YES IT IS BREAKING THE LAW)

Yes we run a DC++ hub but there are no limits and no one is checking to make sure people are sharing. You want to ensure a good friendly atmosphere at the LAN and make everyone feel welcome... first timers might not have anything to share or even the poor noob with no broadband and just got a new PC so they have nothing to share. It also stops people from just sharing their swap file just to get the min share quota up.

Don't become a shafted... this is how it started with them (DC++ min shares grew from 1Gb to over 30gb from what i have heard!!!) & they went down hill FAST!!!

Its a good idea to have a limit but also a bad idea.

Good: cause it ensures that at least some ppl are going to share stuff

Bad: ppl that don't have decent stuff to share are either going to 1, not bother using it at all or 2, going to share useless shite.

Its kinda hard to make a decision from these points but I do see its worth putting a minimum share to encourage ppl to share stuff but make it only a small amount. Also to make it clear that if useless stuff is shared to note that theres a perfectly good reason behind it.

what might be usefull to you might be unusefull to anyone else. for instence, nothing that u guys have, MorB or LOTD have anything i want / need / dont already have. so i could say that warrnambool LANs share crap. but atm its only the out-of-town lans that i've really leached at.

I'm not really that fussed though it is annoying when ppl sit there downloading all your stuff and then never reshare it.

dont worry about never resharing it tommy, i actually use a seperate HDD to share, luckily @ morb i had a big enuf mp3 collection to reach the quota, everything worth leaching is on my Z drive, and when i choose a file, i just share the whole drive!

Considering the vast experiance you have on starting threads and posting even on this forum alone. I still can't believe that you honestly expected this thread to turn out any other way.

with the gigage.. there has to be at least a 2gb limit.. otherwise its not fair.. otherwise ill just password my folders and only give the passwords to ppl with a decent amount shared :) or ill set it so only people with a certain amount can access it.

eg. i know skullshot downloads a ridiculas about of TV epps that he enjoys watching, which amount to liek 500+ gig, do i think his cool because of it? hell no, i know where to get them if i want them as well. do i think im cool cause i can get ut2004 and farcry as soon as they are release? no. i suppse i'm some what ciritial of myself because in no way in hell will i share my installed game dirs, but thats to ANYONE, and for my own reason... and i know a few ppl do the same

now if we could only get the rest of the noob gamers to think like that then LAN's everywhere will once again be about gaming :-) ... ok i woke up from that dream... it would be nice though as LAN's could be cheaper since we wouldn't need 100mb to the desktop networks and could go cheap & get 10mb networks with 100mb uplinks since thats all that is needed for gaming. Just imagine $5 entry's to LAN's!!!! & less admins in debt (I like that one the most :D and i am sure Jarrod will too)

i meant its unfair how some ppl can just game where as the people with heaps of stuff and are being nice and sharing get their pc alll bogged down while playing games and having it lag cos everyone is leeching off them.

One of the downsides of being nice - you suffer. :) Although I notice sks was sharing a lot of stuff, and a couple other users, and they didn't seen to have problems...

I simply turn DC++ off when gaming. Then I can share heaps, and game, and never the 2 shall meet.

yeah but skullshot has a chunky puter.. my puter was dodgy.. still is :| lol. it lags me up when trying to game and share at the same time.
Anywho. people shud still share a decent amount of stuff... or something worth getting.

Looking at it in utilitarianism, I'd ditch the idea. However, 1gb+ might be appropriate in some instances.

for those who dont know what it is, utilitarianism means the greatest good for the greatest number (rule) or greatest good for an instant, example being if there was a truck about to hit someone and you decided to jump in fornt of it, thats act util-ism!

sorry, but if someone was gunna say it, they must at least be given an example so they didn't look as stupid.

I don't think Hubs should be setting minimum share size above 2GB these days because it's just too easy to have a few GB of VOB files or Compressed Archives and who's to say how worthy a share is? Someone might be looking for a file while others just want to raid music.
