View Full Version : Setting up a server

12-10-2003, 03:18 PM
i'm looking at setting up a small server for home use, and i was woundering wot ppl thought would be the best way to do it and what i would need.

I was thinking about using my old school laptop, 500mhz intel celeron. All i really want it to be able to do is to hand out ips and run as a internet server so i can have internet connection sharing going.

So you're basically going for a internet gateway / DHCP server? A router would serve the purpose for that. :) But if you want to set one up yourself, something like Smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) would be a good choice.

or if u wanna use the lappy prolly best stick with wotever wincrap is on it and just load on a 3rd party internet sharing app like winroute or somefin

I would go for Mandrake 9.1 set it up for command line and use the atomicfirewall script provided by www.atomicmpc.com to route and strengthen your box.

although "smoothwall" and other such "out of the box" firewall routers are good....theres nothing like setting up your own from scratch. :D

then why are you suggesting mandrake and atomicfirewall...

not exactly what i'd call "from scratch"

you're just a script kiddie :D

Once again Tron shoots his mouth off before finding the facts....

If u bothered to investigate what the atomic.firewall was, you would find out that it is a cfg file.

This config file is used for Iptables. Unlike so called "Script-Kiddies" I actually know whats going on, as I have edited this file on many occasions, and have bothered to learn a little about it.

So thus forth in this instance I would:

$IPTABLES -P INPUT(Warbys flame) DROP

Have a nice day :D

access-list 101...

w00t 1000 posts for snr

27-10-2003, 01:39 AM
$IPTABLES -P INPUT(Warbys flame) DROP

LOL!!! nice one shadow

yes he may have made 1000 posts, but how many of those 1000 were just flamin other users or just postin some other nonsense :P

at least 90%.

and shadow, you're right it is a config file...

why didn't you write it.... from scratch

as you said.

Why re-envent the wheel, why not Learn from it, and optimize it so that it is a "Special wheel"....not a "Default Wheel" :D

01-11-2003, 08:27 PM
not a bad call shadow

02-11-2003, 02:38 PM
unless you plan on calling said optimized wheel "re-invented" wheel, what you just said is irrelevant.

02-11-2003, 04:48 PM
sheesh...
Ok so let’s look at the word "re-invent"

Basically to take something that has already been invented and do it all over again......from the beginning...this is not what I was saying...what I was saying was to take said wheel(default) that had already been conceived of and add to the functionality or mould it into a wheel that is best suited for your purposes(Special).

In 1895, André Michelin was the first person to use pneumatic tires on an automobile but in 1911, Philip Strauss developed the first tire that suited all drivers’ needs. It was a combination of the original tire and an air filled inner tube.

So I am wondering if Philip Strauss said "let’s re-invent the tire"....no... It would appear that he took something that was already conceived and made it functional for others' needs. (He identified the things that needed to be added to Michelin's original design in order to optimize it) This enforces my argument and proves that it is not "irrelevant."

My apologies for getting off the subject. :D

Enough, kiddies....

02-11-2003, 11:30 PM
lock?

03-11-2003, 11:03 AM
your comprehension skill is lacking....

i know what you said, and i'm comparing it to your "from scratch" configuration as opposed to your modification of the atomic script.

you're optimizing said wheel, and calling it a completely re-invented wheel.

03-11-2003, 04:27 PM
a wheel that is round, is the same as a round wheel is it not?

03-11-2003, 06:27 PM
but is a wheel on a car the same as a large water wheel? Two totally different purposes, based on a very loose idea of said 'wheel'... So 'wheel' in itself is the basis of many invention. It has been reinvented, yes, to suit other purposes than originally proposed.

04-11-2003, 08:41 AM
A definition of re-invention could help clear things up here perhaps...

04-11-2003, 09:56 AM
or just drop the whole thing

04-11-2003, 10:59 PM
but.... you didn't!
:(

04-11-2003, 11:42 PM
serever..manrake...good...use thast

Yes, if you want to know the workings of the inside of a firewall then by all means setup the firewall/gateway from scratch. But if you don't really care about 'how' it works, go for IPCop, Smoothwall, E-Smith, or ClarkConnect.
Out of those 4, IPCop and Smoothwall are the dedicated firewalls, locked down pretty much from head to toe. Whereas E-Smith and ClarkConnect have a few server capabilities, ie: HTTP Serving, FTP Server, Mail Server, etc.

For your use, I'd say IPCop or Smoothwall. But that all depends on how deep you want to get into it. It'd be best to install one of these, then behind the firewall setup a test machine so you can learn how to setup a proper firewall, because if you dive straight into it, and chuck it up as your real firewall you may overlook a few things, and not put in the correct security measures.

Just a suggestion. :)

09-11-2003, 11:57 PM
not put in the proper security measures being the same as doing it without a firewall at all so basically how he's already running...

in other words it wouldnt be that bad if he just did it a dodgey and forgot a few steps.... he could fix them anyway....

10-11-2003, 04:51 PM
do u think maybe he dosen't care anymore? aint seen him post once, after all your "suggestions"

11-11-2003, 03:49 PM
Lol.. i think he gave up when snr and shadow were argueing about something that was totally irrelievent to the whole thread. He prob went to overclockers to get some real opinions. lol

12-11-2003, 09:00 AM
heeeeey thats not fair we've got opinions too!
