View Full Version : Possible southbridge problem on Soltek

17-09-2003, 11:40 AM
Problem:

About 2 days ago after installing Tomb Raider AOD. I noticed that the sound was high pitched and garbled( I use the onboard AC97 codec for the Solteck SL75FRN2 - RL board) also my onboard network was playing up, ie: timeing out on network transfers over 100mb.

so I decided to install a fresh and reset the bios and the reset the configuration within the bios hopeing that it would reset all the IRQ's as I thought that the mcp controller might have gone mad..(heat?)

upon doing so I installed a fresh then proceded to install the NFORCE2 drivers think they where 2.03 and when it came to install teh audio it just skipped right past it.

once rebooted I noticed that the Xp boot screen loader ani was all pixalated and different colours. then when I could get to desktop it had gone to 640x 480 and like 8 bit colors.

moving the mouse produced arrows all over the desktop as they trailed each othere distorting whatever it went over>

I then uninstalled teh NFORCE drivers and all was normal

sorry for the long post but I felt all information was valid and needed

is my SOLTEK boards mcp chip fried?

Update:

upon folowing instructions from this thread http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=228760#228760

Same problem as before nothing changed.....

I went through the steps

1. remove all nvidia drivers (mobo & video card)
2. install 2.45 remix from mwarhead + realtek sound drivers + detonators (try the 45.23 or 44.03)

Still had the corruption I was able to create a restore point and boot into safe mode because I couldnt boot into windows as after the boot splash, the screen went blank and the monitor light just sat there blinking for 5 mins. So I restored the point back to when I hadnt installed the Mwarhead's 2.45 remix

The corrupt display happens whilst installing the Mwarhead's 2.45 remix and or the NFORCE2 2.03 drivers.

what is happining here?

I have managed to get sound and lan by installing a sb live card and another nick ( these wernt in the system when said problems occoured) I guess its time to get the RMA?

Any help guys....

Slightly off topic, but I've got that exact same board, and as of lunchtime today my computer won't even power up. :( I'll have a fiddle when I get home, but I'm not happy.

However, I haven't had a problem before now, except I don't use the onboard sound, so I wouldn't know. I use the 2.03s as well.

what bios rev is ur board beefy?

and have you had any timeouts with the onboard lan transfering files larger than 100mb?

I get this"Cannot copy x.file : network name no longer exists"

or something like that.

still havnt solved the problem.

/me looks at scorptec mobo price for a Asus A7N8X Deluxe, $225.......hmmm tempting

Not sure about rev... I'll check when I get home..

I haven't had a problem with any part of the board, and I've given the network a fair flogging lately..

ok it apears I have fixed it..

I disasembled everything in my case and cleaned every fan and heat sink then reasembled the whole system then booted up installed the 2.45 remix from mwarhead and all is well...

transfered 700mb fine sound is still squelching in tomb raider but must be the gay game cos all other games are fine.

thanx to The_Master for sugesting a clean cos that must have done it....maybe the memory or agp card was not seated properly dunno but heh saved me 200 smacktards...maybe more testing to be done to ensure that the problem has vapourised..

At least yours works. :( Mine has gone AWOL... I tried removing and replacing everything, and there's still no power. Gonna try a couple more things tomorrow, but it's looking bad...

sound in tomb raider is prolly a programming issue with tomb raider, I recall bf1942 initially had issues with fast/garbled sound thru onboard audio... could be similar.

good to see u've fixed ur probs shad.

time to put teh mobo on video beffy ?

I've only had this one about 4 months... so NO. I don't think the RMA would work if it's full of holes.

18-09-2003, 12:27 PM
heh captioned "still under RMA? oh well..." *blam*

18-09-2003, 01:29 PM
Actually, I took it into Birdy's shop to see what he could do with it, and he said it's the ghosts of all the computers I shot coming back to haunt me... :)

18-09-2003, 02:20 PM
maybe if you had monitor problems...

18-09-2003, 02:21 PM
No.. motherboards from part 2 of filming.. ;)

Update:

all apears to be fine I just format c:\ /autotest and installed 2003 enterprise and its running like a .............well its running.

Upon my adventures with this problem I found out that the northbridge HSF needs to be clean and working well other wise its one F@$%CT up prob after another.

also if anyone is toying with 2003 server and want an 1337 prog to make 2003 like xp (but much faster of course) get this....

saves a shiet load of time. :D
