any ideas?t would be better if it started up and shut down faster than 98, and didnt blue screen and crash every hour. the user system is all stuffed up and it takes actual time to load icons.

hmmm, let's see.. *restarts XP machine and 98 machine at same time and starts counting*

XP machine - about 11 seconds from POST to play
98 Machine - i gave up after 30 seconds...

:)

If you got major problems with XP, then I'd be looking at the user, not the system ;)

What kind of system are you trying to run it on?

my athlon xp 1800 oced to 1.9 gig fresh out of the box this year. It was sitting in the same room as my ol system (900 meg duron running 98se for 3 years - virused to the shitouse and with a full hdd) and when i restarted them both at the same time the D900 was up twice as fast.

the only explanation is that i dont have enough ram, (256 meg ddr) but why would a operating system need 100 meg just to idle plus 10 meg every app you install.

do the old START>RUN>MSCONFIG. and see what u got starting up.. that's the 1st thing i always attack when i have a slow start up. and nother would be de-frag

try running bootvis also, i can't remember where to get it from but supposedly it works

yer bootvis - google it, u can grab it strate off the ms site its part of that extras thingo which includes tweakui n stuff

Powertoys for XP?

I don't recall it being bundled with that - but maybe that was when I dl'd powertoys and now they re-jigged the bundle... *shrug*

always best to get your files from the maker/reputable source, if you think microsoft's software is less likely to have performance inhibiting issues than software created elsewhere... cough ;)

got bootvis, and it helped a little with the bootup time, but xp is still a gay os - sure there are no better alternatives. I had to use a mac for one lan and nearly threw up, the only saving grace of the mac lan is everyones crap at Quake three, except me.

but xp is still a gay os

agreed!!!

sure there are no better alternatives.

im still on windows 98 as far as for gaming goes and will only stop using it when it's no longer supported by games. it's faster, uses less memory and resources has the least problems with compatibility...........and for 98 being unstable and crashes heaps?? bah! literally have haven't had any of that months now. will only crash if you got crap hardware or if there is a bad case of PEBKAC =)

or i could replace my os with a wet paper bag full of jam rolls, i dont run servers or have any need for a program that makes a cammel made of code dance around the screen so what use do i have for linux.
Someone correct me if linux supports the computer games windows xp does but otherwise its not worth swapping os's on a gaming system.

some titles have been / will be ported to linux, as far as upcoming titles are concerned, it's almost a certainity that we will at least see Doom III when it's released as ID have ported a lot of their Win32 games to linux. UT and UT2003 were also ported. as for the rest, well, you have no idea what WineX is do you? but yeah, WineX does not support all windows games, but supports some the best titles, more info can be found at http://www.transgaming.com
