View Full Version : Specialised LAN's

19-07-2003, 12:17 AM
Well here I am, I said that after Morb 5 I would be seeing if there was any more interest in running specialised LAN's.

I am close to have enough numbers for Diablo LOD and Neverwinter Nights LAN's and was also looking at putting on a night of RTS games.

If people vest their interest here about weather they think its a good idea and what games they would like to see played, then I will see how much farther this idea goes.

I can pretty much say that a Diablo LOD LAN is going to happen as I have had some interest, but a few more players would make the night more enjoyable.

Will probably ask the Morb crew if I can run the events under their banner as I will probably need to ask them for equipment. Thats if they feel so inclined after some stupid prats helped themselves at Morb 5.

Specialised LANs are usually small, more social events rather than proper LANs, especially with the games you mentioned. There's pretty tight player limits, so player numbers will be small. There's not really much needed in the way of equipment either, just some basic networking gear.

I think you've basically covered all the games that a worthy of 'specialised' lans. RTS games, D2 / NWN and possibly some other strange genres (sports games / racing games) cover most of the bases that don't see much light at normal lans.

Dunno if any of that made sense, but meh.

If I can make it, I'm keen for the D2 / NWN lans.

19-07-2003, 01:21 PM
I'm kinda over D2 but I'll be up for a NWN LAN for sure.

lots of hours of WOLF: ET... sounds fun...

Gentlemen, I'm sure I've expressed my interest in anything to do with NWN sufficiently, but just in case....
YeS pLeAsE!!!

Incidently, have any of you hardwired, computer junkies ever played 'Real-Life' Dungeons & Dragons...? Any interest there...?

ok I'm going in search of a 16+ player venue for a RPG/RTS Lan. Max players for LAN will be 30 but i can't really see more than 16 turning up.

No DoD/CS/BF1942/UT/VietCong/Quake3

The Games i will be looking at Are

NwN, HW:cataclysm, MediEval:Total War, Diablo 2, And Total Annhiliation, C&C, Warcraft 3 + any other RTS/RPG's that people are interested in.

Cost will simply be for venue/table hire. Cabling and switching will be provided by MorB

Chances are i have a venue sorted. Just need to know what weekend suits people to LAN on. (venues a little cold but with enough computers it'll warm up quick

August the 2nd or the 9th look good ATM

20-07-2003, 03:19 PM
Yeah.... I also used to play Warhammer 40K and Necromunda back when i was at Uni (believe it or not it was my girlfriend at the time that got me into it)

Can provide a venue here in Hamilton for next to nothing. 24+ seats, comfortable room, networking and power already laid out. All depends if ppl are willing to travel or not?

20-07-2003, 05:48 PM
Empire Earth...

and travelling for an RPG lan may be a little doubtful... dunno how hardcore ppl are

Have you read any of this thread? This is for RTS and RPG not FPS.

I've played Necromunda and we're currently playing Bloodbowl. There's even been a thread on the topic:

Great idea Blacklord! a real piece of inspiration went into that idea. Its just a shame that sombody already thought of doing it months ago, namely ME!

20-07-2003, 07:47 PM
I mean, im willing to play the role of the "happy LANer" and get together and talk about the ideas and planning them, but basicly you have kinda pissed me off.

21-07-2003, 11:24 AM
nah claw i think kitty kat is talking about lrp(live role playing) am i correct ???
i used to do it all the time but then our gaming group fell apart!

21-07-2003, 11:27 AM
yes please mister tholian sir
i would like to sign up for both the nwn and d2 lod lans
if i can ever get thesse 2 fuckinng games to actually install on my box again!

remeber sil there is aways the few and the proud who will travel to play their special games an i am 1 of them!

21-07-2003, 07:05 PM
in reply to beefy's suggestion - if u ever had one of those lans for nwn or somefin there im sure i'd b happy to escort kitty there personally ;)

21-07-2003, 07:09 PM
All I'm doing is organising a LAN. If I piss u off then Don't Come

PS if u want to know who came up with the idea look at the Melb Tribes Players League. They came up with the idea of specialised lans only about 4-5 years ago. They held tribes only LANs an they rocked.

A venue in warrnambool would be perferable. I think i have one but I'll know for sure tomorrow night.

BTW beefy how about another HAMLAN ? I know 3 or 4 people that would roadtrip with me.

22-07-2003, 02:55 AM
Do we live in Melbourne... NO
Did I claim to have invented specilised LAN's... NO

All I did was suggest that I would be more than happy to organise such LANs if the general LANing comunity of Warrnambool and surrounding areas that that it was a good idea.

What you have done is completely undermine my effort to get involved in LAN organisation. I have posted that I was going to ask yourself and anyone else from Morb or LOTD organisational group for assistance, so its not like im starting some kind of LAN take over.

You are already seen as one of the key LAN organisational figures here in Warrnambool, why do you feel the need to claim something that someone else has come up with.

Yes... im not very impressed, but we can either try to work something out here or draw this out more than needs to be done.

P.S. If you do decide to draw this matter out im more than capable of haveing you and any memory of you completely wiped out by a well trained team of unimpressed Smacktards.

Might hold off until end of August for that one...

22-07-2003, 06:37 PM
FFS ur hosting a Diablo 2 LAN

I don't wanna play that so I'm hosting a LAN thats mainly RTS based ? Jesus Christ get a grip man.

Me an jarrod have got a venue an were intending to throw a LAN for RTS and Opflash I just added NwN for U an the people u'd organised. Well fuck that. It's RTS only now with Opflash. U don't like it then don't come.

FFS i was gonna ask for people interested to come help out with the NwN an dialbo 2 cause I don't know what the fuck I'm doing with those games.

Come see me when ur not pissed off.

22-07-2003, 11:57 PM
theres more "we's" in that post... - its only you! sif i care bout rts.x

23-07-2003, 03:23 AM
Well there is nothing more for me to say. I presented my arguement and lost because I can't be expected to act rationally with a complete gimboid.

Go for it BL, do your thing, hope the event runs well. I'm not going any further with this cuz it would just end up makeing some punters not bother showing up no matter who organised the event. Apart from that it's impossible to argue with someone that can't string a simple post together with out completely contradicting themselves. I mean I hardly need to argue against what BL is doing when he is doing a good enough job on his own.

But seriously, go ahead run the event and I hope it all goes well for you.

I will however be chooseing not to attend and from what I here I would not be surprised if a few other regulars decide not to show either.

26-07-2003, 12:03 AM
Hang on ???? U came up with the idea after we were playing OPFlash and medieval total war .

30-07-2003, 10:25 PM
i still think ofp only at nukes place was the best idea we had for anythin

whats the formality required where u wanna organise a bunch of games with 8 player typical player counts.. sifnt line our stairs and do that way we could fit 2 on the landing 4 in the lounge and 4 in our computer room and another 6 or 7 on the stairs :D

30-07-2003, 11:11 PM
and anyone else can fit on the roof.

09-08-2003, 04:02 PM
I've just read all the threads for this topic and I still can't figure out whats going on

Is there gonna be a rts lan or what... if so In know about 4-5 people who would be interested in turning up... that is if it would be enought to get it going.

I wouldn't mind seeing some starcraft, warcraft, homeworld + cataclysm(doesn't fuss me which one), total annihalation, rise of nations, latest C&C, and some Warlords Battlecry 2. I'd really like to see some warlords battlecry 2 played. I'll bring along a copy or two if the lan goes ahead.

09-08-2003, 07:15 PM
At the moment, no there isn't.

Although count me, nuke and lucaski - and perhaps parko if he doesn't have to milk - in.

10-08-2003, 03:46 PM
What will it take to get a specialized lan up and going then...

I'm sure there'll be a few that will turn up if you guys from morb get one going. I would if I could(don't have enough experience to get one going myself though).

I just see that its a shame that you guys are not putting in an effort because some people are arguing over whos idea it is...now I don't want to start a fight but I do spose each to they're own.

It just seems that us gamerz are the ones being penalized by this. Now if its going to be to much trouble, and help is required. I know myself and probably a couple of other gamerz are more than happy to help you guys out.

anyway... what will it take to get this lan going?????????

10-08-2003, 04:31 PM
err.. you just find 8ppl (max player limit on most games), a switch or even a hub should suffice, and say "oi fellas come round to my place and bring ur pcs for some RTS action; bring cables and everything else u need and tables/chairs if possible"

it doesn't need "experience" per se ;)

10-08-2003, 06:11 PM
or even just pick a date, lemme know an i cand lend the switches/cables required... mebbe even my 2 trestles if need be...

12-08-2003, 12:24 AM
Well I was still going to do it, I just thought i would wait a bit for all the woohaa to die down. But as it seems it has and the kids are asking for it I will make amends and do something about it, unless the general would like a crack at it. Or if you like we can work together at it.

12-08-2003, 09:20 AM
Well I can set up a small nework of 8 or so, easily but anything bigger where you have to link more than 1 hub to another I'll be struggling. I'm kinda hoping that someone from morb would organize a bigger lan then 8 people. That way everyone whos interested can turn up rather than a select few.

Tholian if your capable of doing this I would be more than happy to help out if its needed. We will also need to do something about a venue. I'd have it at my joint (plenty of room for 30 easy)but the old man wouldn't approve. If anyones got any suggestions?

12-08-2003, 11:50 PM
dun worry about equipment, we can help there fine, i just cbf with a lan i prolly wouldnt wanna go to :P

13-08-2003, 12:17 PM
I'd love a rematch General Grosnich in Desert Combat. Been practicing my helicopter flying !!!

13-08-2003, 02:15 PM
That rematch sounds good Vipster...

So has anyone know of a decent place to hold this lan, and is anyone in particular looking to get it going. As I said in previous posts, I'm more than happy to help out but I can't really organize it. I also know of a couple of other people who would like to help... are you up for the job skullshot.

does anyone know how much it's costing to have the lan of the damned held at seal or fletcher jones? Do you guys think it would be worth having it held there?

Also will it be just a rts and games like neverwinter and diablo sort of lan? That way we can have a bit of a break from the first person shooters. but I spose its up to the gamers who turn up. I dont mind playing some fps but thats all we play at like morb and lan of the damned. So it would be nice to break away from that for a change.

13-08-2003, 03:32 PM
i think the best place for something like this would probably have to be the dennington school there was a lan at a while back... its rite size an i think the price is right from memory

13-08-2003, 04:04 PM
There's some pix of the Dennington venue in the MorB photo album if you want a look.
Smackdown LAN (http://www.morb.ath.cx/photos/index.php?TopicID=smackdown)
I'd love a rematch General Grosnich in Desert Combat. Been practicing my helicopter flying !!! :lol:Isn't the current topic RTS LANs???
does anyone know how much it's costing to have the lan of the damned held at seal or fletcher jones? Do you guys think it would be worth having it held there? The Business Center was $100 plus trestles ($14 each + delivery), and the SDS hall is $60 plus trestles. Whether it's worth it or not all depends on your numbers and what you charge I guess.

14-08-2003, 12:11 AM
thats why the dennington scheme is a bit better suited, coz all they asked for was $10 per person that was there, or somefin like that

14-08-2003, 02:36 PM
They provided trestles too didn't they?

14-08-2003, 07:58 PM
school tables, yes, trestles no :D

15-08-2003, 01:12 AM
Well here is an up-date on whats going on. The LAN will go ahead! General Grosnich and I are going to organise it. Where looking at the middle of October as a date (one or two weeks after Cycophils wedding), the SDS as a venue and say about $10 a head. We are getting together to work out the details over the weekend so we should have it posted in the events calander and have registrations open soon.

Thanks Skulls and MorB for the offer of equipment, be happy to take you up on that. I'm sure either General or I will contact you some stage next week with what we think we will need.

So hang tight kids, more info soon.

15-08-2003, 12:38 PM
wootah

15-08-2003, 04:41 PM
so after all that, what kind of LAN is it?

15-08-2003, 09:53 PM
YES WELL WHEN ARE U GUNNA TELL THE MASSES WHEN ITS ON????? WHEN ARE THE VOICES GUNNA STOP RATTLING AROUND IN MY HEAD???????

15-08-2003, 10:49 PM
