View Full Version : Virus at MorB 5
I got home Sunday and did my religious post-LAN full system virus scan only to find I picked up "W32.Pinfi". I advise everyone who hasn't scanned their PCs to do so just as a precaution.
From the Symantec Virus Information Database
W32.Pinfi is a memory-resident polymorphic virus that will infect the .EXE and .SCR files. This virus can also spread via mapped drives and network shares.

EDIT: Ironically, minutes after I posted this I got e-mailed "W32.Bugbear.B.Dam".
THE VIRUSES ARE OUT TO GET ME!!!
VET didn't pick up anything on mine during the event, but I have seen this virus before.
I can't believe people don't have virus scanners installed in this day and age :|
"I can't believe people don't have virus scanners installed in this day and age "
I agree, but some ppl don't learn. But apart from that I enjoyed the day very much.
I do have a virus checker installed. How do you think I found the virus, DUH.
I usually run it whenever browsing the network, leeching or surfing the net. I musta forgot on my last leech session at about 12.00 Sunday. My mind was elsewhere, probably at home in bed, lol.
And Vipster is that a Toulsoft jukebox I see in your avatar?
anti-virus should run resident hence u should be able to even host/access and infected file... vet is quite capable of it, i thought everyone used norton tho - can't it do that?
yea my bad i know i had a virus or somthing a few minutes after i rocked up not sure if it was mine or i got it from someone... most likly mine so sorry to all ,no virus scan got a new hdd before i went to morb.. but its much easier to blame shadowman so it was his fault
yeah, it's shadowman's fault - like everything else :P
Yeah i seen a few viruses through WORKGROUP on your machine Nuke.. Not sure which files it was though. Did you end up fixing the virus problem?
LOL well i seem to have it to. Its got to do with the eva popular DivX codex. I got the virus report and file structure here.
The file E:\MorB 5\divx codecs\smrpatchsetup\setup.exe is infected with the W32.Pinfi virus.
Its an oldie from october 2001 so most virus scanners should beable to pick it up.
i did a check and im clean *phew*
if you attend a LAN this day in age without having a virus scanner running throughout the event, you deserve any virus you pick up.
as a rule, always do a virus def's update just before you leave for a LAN.
Some of us don't have swishy fast machines Silencer and have to scratch for every bit of resources when playing games. Other than when actually in game I do run virus scanners.
i think 3Mb of system memory in 3 processes (this is inoculate at work) which use a total 0.05% cpu for the most time - that is hardly justification... in-game there is no need for an av app to be active coz there are no files being dragged onto the machine, sure it would keep an eye on running apps making sure they are not malicious or writing bad things to teh hard drive... if u can tell me antivirus causes more than a loss of 1 fps i would be surprised.

Hey, you're supposed to be surprised. :(
More than 1 fps! :o
I'm shocked
OMG U mean thats why iwas getting 149 FPS instead of 150 ?? Shit DAM U VIRUS SCANNER

You tell us that AV makes bugger all difference to game performance, and then turn around and say there is no need to run AV while in a game. What is the point of that? It sounds like you're having an arguement with yourself....
Anyway I try to do the right thing and warn people of a potential hazard and all I get for my trouble, as usual, is focking criticism. So fock you all and your focked up personality disorders.
lol claw.. now you know to just say "meh fucke em" let them find out for themselves.
no, he didn't contradict himself, you misread it.
he wrote that while a game is running the AV program would sit idle hence not causing any lag to the machine, while it's not necessary, neither is disabling it - since it will still run pretty much the same
See above closing remarks
ya me picked up that same virus..dunno where it came from. My system was clean before I came and I go home with 7% less of my origanal storage..meh my fault for not taking the time to install Nortons..
