I'm running a dual boot: win2k and win98SE which i dont wanna have but am forced to becasue win2k wont let me get onto my home network.
So every time i wanna get onto the network i have to reboot into win98SE which is time comsuming and its only running at 600x480, 256 bit colour

Why can't you access the network in 2K? can we get some more details here?

And why can you only get 640 x 480 and 256 colours???

my assumption is a students laptop computer, which would be locked down for the network... hence he has 98 on it and no idea where the proprietry drivers for the video/sound/other hardware are found but luckily it detects network drivers automagically so one is able to get network cranking

i assume 98 was on the machine first(?!) with win2k loaded after that..

so the "problem" is the need for 98? you want do somefin like a different hardware profile for school/home..

My it is a laptop but not a student laptop and i can only get 600x480 because i cann't be stuffed loading on the proper driver becasue that will just take time and i only use win98 to get onto the network.
I was hoping u could give me some ideas on y my network isn't working casue i have none and i dont want to have to end up formatting it. And i have loaded on the drivers for the network devices.

what exactly happens when u attempt to network in win2k, do you mean you are unable to logon in win2k, or just that u cannot access administrator functions...or is it that you just cant see the other machines at all

my first thoughts are (if you just cant access the networked PCs) that IP settings need to be checked, do you require static or dynamic IPs, if dynamic, do you receive an IP or if static, is there a valid IP set and is it in same subnet..

i cant see any other machines on the network.
my IP is static. These is a valid IP and subnet.

next obvious things to try are:
1- check workgroup settings are the same
2- try to ping one of the other machines
-if it works then u have a windows related prob
-if it dont then it cant physically see the other machines.

if the ping works and workgroups are the same, and u still can't "see" them, try going to \\<ip.of.other.machibne> in windows explorer
