tips to succesfull lans

i was thinking with the huge mass of information you gather while hosting or going to lans you may have some ideas on how to set a good lan up. i know how to set up free house lans, but have no idea how to seperate nerds from their money to cover the cost of my upgrades, i mean overheads.

no tricks, i dont earn a cent from running morb, if anything i end up out-of-pocket..

basically, its good to have a stable and well distributed and planned network setup. We usually have access to some more expensive equipment, to tie in with some small downloevel switches, which is the best we can do to make sure that 24 people arent being piped through one 100Mbps uplink cable to the other 40 ppl in the building.

the only other thing to be careful with is power, u need to know what the power circuits are capable of before you start loading them, and its best to pre-plan to some extent, where things will be/how much grunt they want..

i am considering reducing the cost of attending MorB 5 as we have been able to purchase alot of equipment with the (finally) extra cash left from MorB 4, i guess the most important thing to runnin lans for me is to make sure that people enjoy themselves, sometimes that means alot of sleepless nites for me, but thats not important - i do that anyway :D

want a lan in mildura? how many geekz there?

a lan in mildura would be awsome, i was thinking about running one, or at least selling some cat 5 - which i now have 300 meters of.
We had litle lans at the back of a church, 6-14 people, but that was once every week during the holidays. ASLs got up to 50 people, before tech (the local fat man when it comes to... lans) stopped having them. I would say anywhere between 50 and 100 people would go to lans, but thats including all my contacts now in adelaide and melbourne, dam uni

i was thinking of making cheap ass titles out of a road sign, cut up and engraved, best cs player, most shared files.

yep that was our party, i was not involved untill we left balarat, and was told by eggman that he was the proud owner of a 24 port switch. silly turk, he made the most obvious nab, starred at it for a good hour before packing it up with his comp. Anyways hes been banned for life ( even though he still comes to a few of our little lans). I was thinking if he goes to a big one we will make a point of searching him on the way out.

And joel aka the coroner (pronounced like the car not the dead guy mover) "found him out" being that eggman wanted to give it back without being man handled by the goths from the lan-x. Joel needs to eat his vegies

sKuLLsHoT i say that $20 is a good price for 24+ hours of high bandwidth lanning and if MorB 5 doesnt require any mory devices well you and whoever else has been out of pocket from other lans should be reimbursed... and yeah more free pizza!

thats nice to konw scythe - and there will be more pizza at M5, if i can get a sponsorship from pinkys that would mean even more pizza :D - and with being out of pocket from lans, its only ever me - i prepay for venue and all materials that morb uses no need to drag anyone else into it.. if the association ever gets formed, it will be paying for events in the future

so mojo was at that lanx ay? u were prolly sitting real close to me - that eggman guy is banned from morb's too - that foto we have means no lan for him...

hmm, a morb style lan would be good in the ol home town, some time in the holiday breaks. But warnambool is miles away, last time we made a road trip to a lan it cost us dearly in fuel munchies and speeding tickets. Next time im in mildura i will enquire about venues for hire, i should say im a morb associate for credibility.

Yea i was at lan-x nearly keeping up in day of defeat, good gig, minus the darkish atmosphere. Lan-x-4 sounds pretty good, but 5 days of heavy lanning, that place will smell of nerd for weeks.

Its about 6-7 hour drive to mildura from here. atm petrol will cost a heap. so either way you will lose a lot of money. unless you happen to come a long a bag of money or something....

in the car on the way back last time (lan-x mas) i came across a big bag of 24 port switch, that would have covered the petrol if it wasnt returned. I was saying it would be hard for morb to organize a lan 500 kms away, if its just a south west gaming corperation. I couldnt be stuffed going to a warnambool for a lan cause its not close to melbounre or mildura.

Maybe Morb should have a LAN somewhere else instead of Australia. Like a real HUGE one. Maybe in Geelong or something.
say 500+ people. $25 a computer.
and use the money to get more equipment for more Morb LANS or even use the money to buy something to use as a Prize in say a competition next time a LAN is held.

most of the ppl round here know im always keen for a lan and will travel muchos far just to be at one, helping get one off its feet in a faraway land sure sounds like fun too!

haha, so far mildura lans have been recorded like an ancient myth, even though they started at the release of quake.
...then a new leader was born, attepting to sell dogy wares purchased from the far away land of "melbourne swap meets" the human by the name of joshua. but low he was absorbed into the legitamite buisness of office everything and hence became fat and could no longer run the lans, so the torch was past on to the dwarf known by the name of tech. But he too soon became to fat and lazy to continue the tradition of games and fun for all mildura people and lands around, so he thence cancelled the holy gathering. But a new order has arrived from a distant land to smite all lesser lan parties and lay burnination to the city of mildura. these new invaders go by the name of morb, and commoners from the land who agree with the ideaology of moving or bleeding will rise up, get off their asses and see how much it would cost to hire out a hall somewhere

well it mite be worth tossing the idea around, just to see what interest there is... mebbe put word out to come here and let us know they are interested..

As for the 500+ lan in Geelong, that would be most excellent, however you could never get the numbers. MonserLan (although I missed it) apparently nearly got their budgeted 80 peoples. Perhaps a conjoined effort from MorB and MonsterLan could pull something fantastic out of their asses!

as far as big lans go shafted held the big day in with 1000 lanners that everybody should of but didnt hear about, even though thers pics on this website. A 50 to 100 people lan in mildura would easily possible, but id have to talk to the other yr 12s, the merlinator and coroner bunch. If morb .inc wanted to help out with a server and some all round coolness that would be great but i wount probly start to organize anything untill the mid year holidays, easter break seems full of shafteds and lan-x-4 and dental work. Stupid wisdom teeth.

But just for thinking about, how much do you pay to hire a reasonable hall, how do you avoid insurance payments, how much free pizza is required to keep lanners eating the cables?

thats a very good idea - i have already spoken to monsterlan admins in brief about what we do, it might be worth persuing, not necessarily an insanely high amount of ppl, but anything around even 200 ppl should be feasible, if ballarat has the capacity, then geelong surely does..i may just shoot the ML lads an email about such an idea..

mildura lan sounds like it would be a fairly good one. the gellong lan where we can all gather would be exellent! christmas hols before the next big day in could be good. call it a practice!

If your worried about numbers, you want to hold a big event, you want to atract as many different people as possible then there is only one answer.

COMPUTER EXPO

Give it a cool name, make it an annual event, find a great venue. Have laners, a swap meet, a rave tent, James Brown, have it just up the road from a porn store and have one of those attractions that has say a pool full of blood with ill tempered mutated sea bass with Bill Gates sitting in a chair poised above, hit the target with a decapitated head of a microsoft exec and in he goes. YAY

Someone said the reason microsoft doesnt care that much about people copying their software because they are still using the software. Then when they have to do something legit the only thing they can use is a MS product.

look at all the games ppl play - the mot popular games are some of the most accessible games also...there is some strong correlation there..

just got back from a lan in mildura, only a little 6 person one though, and i finally got a backup of cc generals but played starcraft more anyway, cc generals was a 2 hour boreathon waiting for someone to build 50 scud storms and backstab everyone, then realizing you cant unally. Starcraft on the other hand was 3 fun packed games of fast killing goodness.

Anyways one tip for a good lan, wonka caramel fudge sludge, in moderation.

lan in mildura after mid year exams, i hope. Apparently if you get a good exam time table you get a 12 month break, or was that if you fail exams... anyway if i get enough time off i will look into halls and networking tech to borrow for low prices.

Eggman is a champ, a true hero of lans across the southern seaboard, ok eggmans a turk who plays cs at lans he doesnt pay to attend, and owns cause hes not a fat white male nerd. As far as i know he doesnt hack (though his little brother did at an adl and swore he didnt, pewfter) and may lack the computer skillz to hack. He stole the 24 port off the lan-x peoples, but then just gave it back via the coroner.

So far all i have to say is week is spelt weak in that context, unless its a clever double meaning, as in sleep during the weekdays cause weekends are full of lanning goodness, now with vitamin d.

mate he still stole the dam thing sure giving it back might give a little redmption but how is he a champ? and a hero ?he sounds like a god dam tool to me.. stealing a switch form a lan.. id expect that from some of the guys i know (not in the lanning comunity) who i drink with and stuff but laners are some of the most freindly civilised people i know.. even the lotd guys, i dunno why he's still walking the lan-x guys must be pretty tolorate, if i ever seen him knickin a switch id rip out his spinal cord and choke the biatch with it

mmm no, you shouldnt. considering nuke has one proper blade almost half a meter long, and one rather blunt machete (which could be sharpened), I doubt your home made jobbie is gonna mean much, besides which, if u seriously think someone is gonna stab someone at a LAN you're a very disturbed and deranged individual and we probably don't want you "enjoying" a LAN with us.
